Ego Dissolution

The temporary falling away of the ordinary sense of separate self during deep ceremony — experienced in many traditions as an encounter with the unity of all existence and the presence of the divine.

Ego Dissolution names the temporary falling away of the ordinary sense of a separate, bounded self that some participants report during deep ceremony. In this state, familiar boundaries between the self and the surrounding world — other people, nature, the divine — seem to soften, opening into an experience often described as unity, interconnectedness, or direct communion with something larger than the individual self.

Earth Connection Community understands ego dissolution as a spiritual and experiential phenomenon, not a clinical or psychiatric one. It is a recognized feature of deep contemplative and ceremonial states found across the world's mystical traditions — from the Christian mystic's language of self-emptying to Buddhist teachings on the illusion of a fixed self. ECC's facilitators hold ceremonial space for participants moving through this experience, offering steady, attentive presence so that whatever arises can be met with safety and spiritual meaning.
