An isolation retreat is a period of deliberate solitude undertaken before or alongside plant apprenticeship, removing a person from ordinary social contact, conversation, and distraction so they can listen more closely to the spirit. It is a long-standing element of the Shipibo curanderismo tradition, in which apprentices withdraw to devote themselves fully to prayer and relationship with a master plant.
During an isolation retreat, a participant typically remains in a quiet, private setting — limiting conversation, entertainment, and social contact — while following an accompanying dieta. The stillness serves a spiritual purpose: prayerful attentiveness undertaken in service of relationship with the divine, rather than solitude sought for its own sake.
Isolation retreats vary in length depending on the depth of the plant apprenticeship, from a few days of quiet preparation before ceremony to longer, dedicated periods for those pursuing a master plant diet. Facilitators guide participants in how much isolation their preparation calls for.
