Mestre

A title used in Brazilian ayahuasca traditions (especially Santo Daime and UDV) for a senior teacher or spiritual guide who carries authority within the tradition.

Mestre (Portuguese for "master" or "teacher") is a title used within Brazilian ayahuasca traditions — most notably Santo Daime and União do Vegetal (UDV) — for a senior spiritual leader who holds recognized authority within that tradition. The founders of these traditions, Raimundo Irineu Serra (Santo Daime) and José Gabriel da Costa (UDV), are known within their respective communities as Mestre Irineu and Mestre Gabriel.

Mestre is specific to the Brazilian traditions in which it originated. ECC's own ceremonial lineage — Shipibo curanderismo — uses its own titles, such as lineage holder and facilitator. ECC is not affiliated with Santo Daime or UDV and does not use the title mestre for its own facilitators.
