Purga is the Spanish word for "purge," and within ayahuasca ceremony it refers to the physical and spiritual release — often through vomiting, but sometimes through other forms of release — that frequently accompanies the sacrament's work. In the Shipibo curanderismo tradition from which ECC's lineage descends, purga is honored as an integral and welcomed part of ceremony, not an unwanted side effect: it is understood as the body and spirit releasing what no longer serves them, whether described as stagnant energy, old grief, or spiritual heaviness.
Earth Connection Community's facilitators hold purga with reverence and practical care — buckets and water are made available as part of ceremony logistics, and the purging itself is regarded as sacred, often marked with icaros (ceremonial healing songs) or quiet acknowledgment rather than met with alarm. Participants are prepared for the possibility of purga during intake screening and ceremony orientation, so that when it occurs, it is understood as part of the medicine's own way of working.
